Dark Souls Creator Considers A Battle Royale Game, We Imagine It’ll be Hard AF

Original Article:

Dark Souls Battle Royale, Could you imagine?

The popularity of titles like Apex Legends and Fortnite may soon spread to the realms of Drangleic and Lordran, as the creator of the Dark Souls series has expressed a strong interest in making a game in the battle royale genre.

FromSoftware is the Japanese video game development studio that is best-known for creating Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy, and Bloodborne, with a spiritual successor to those games being released soon in the form of Sekiro: Shadows Die TwiceThe “Soulsborne” series has always had a unique take on the idea of multiplayer, with players being able to call in help from other people, while also living under the threat of being invaded within their own game by an enemy player and having to fight them off. That’s on top of trying to navigate the harsh environment and powerful monsters that make up each game, too.

FromSoftware might be moving in a different direction after the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, as the creator of the Dark Souls series Hidetaka Miyazaki told The Telegraph that he is interested in making a game in the battle royale genre in the future:

“There’s always the possibility…these games are definitely fun. And we’re interested in the patterns they are taking. If we did it, it might be a bit different! But we’re definitely interested and there’s definitely that possibility in the future. We’d love to take a crack at them someday.”

Hidetaka Miyazaki also addressed the need for single player experiences and how the industry needs companies making a diverse variety of games, including genres that might seem as though they are cashing in on a trend at first glance:

“We do need this diversity in the industry…regardless of what From Software is doing, we need people making battle royale games and live services and we need people making single-player focussed experiences. We feel that this diversity is what will keep everyone going.”

FromSoftware is best-known for Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series, but they have produced games in different styles before, such as the virtual reality adventure game called Déraciné that involved faeries in a boarding school, so it’s not as if the company is averse to trying out different genres.

If FromSoftware made a battle royale game that was part of a brand new license, then it would be a more than welcome addition to their library. The only problem would be if they tried to make a battle royale game that was set in the Bloodborne or Dark Souls world, which would likely cause the hardcore fans of the series to riot at the thought of seeing Hollows running around an island and sniping each other from miles away using Heavy Soul Arrow spells.

The battle royale genre might be oversaturated, but the creators of Bloodborne and Dark Souls could likely make a game that changes everything we know about parachuting onto an island and scrounging for weapons. For our money, we hope that becomes a reality at some point in the future, though we’d be just as happy with more of what made FromSoftware famous in the first place.
